MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Despite playing in its first-ever league championship event, the all-freshman UT Arlington women's golf team looked like veterans as the Mavericks overcame a 90 minute rain delay to tie for fourth place after the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Championships at Raven Golf Club.

UTA fired a 23-over par 307 and is tied with Appalachian State, today's playing partner, for fourth place in the 11-team field. The Mavericks and Mountaineers are seven strokes behind third place Troy and are three shots in front of sixth place Texas State.

Coastal Carolina, the highest Golfstat ranked team in the league, owns the team lead at 13-over par. Georgia Southern sits just two strokes back at 15-over. The teams return to the 6,171-yard, par 71 Raven Golf Club tomorrow for the tournament's second round. UTA is paired with golfers from Appalachian State and Texas State and will go off hole No. 1 beginning at 7:30 a.m. (CST).

Sydney Garber (Rockwall, Texas) and Ava Schwienteck (Magnolia, Texas) are tied for the team lead and are in a tie for eighth place overall at 3-over par. Madigan Murray (McKinney, Texas) is tied for 18th at 5-over, while Kate Tran is 12-over par after the first round and is tied for 40th place in the 54-golfer field.

Garber showed nerves early as the first golfer off the 10th tee. She dropped a pair of strokes with bogeys on her opening hole and No 13 before moving back to even par with birdies on nos. 15 and 16. On the front nine, she dropped two strokes before a birdie on No. 8 put her at 1-over heading into her final hole. A fairway shot in the water led to a double bogey to put her at 3-over for the day.

Schwienteck, the team's scoring leader, finished the back nine at even par with three bogeys and three birdies. She finished three over on the front after bogeys on nos. 3, 7 and 8.

Georgia Southern sophomore Julianna Collett is tied with Troy junior Lindsey Harrison for the individual lead after both golfers turned in an even par 71.
