TULSA, Okla. -- Freshman Ava Schwienteck posted her second straight top 10 performance today, finishing in a tie for sixth place at the ORU Shootout at Meadowbrook Country Club.
Schwienteck (Magnolia, Texas), turned in rounds of 74-72-75 to finish the 54-hole event with a 5-over par 221 to finish in a 3-way tie for sixth place. Missouri State’s Verena Gimmy claimed medalist honors at 2-under par, four strokes ahead of Wichita State senior Taryn Torgerson, who was one of three golfers to register the lowest round of the day with a 2-under par 70.
Playing in only their second tournament in program history, the Mavericks finished 16th overall. UTA defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi and finished just eight strokes from a top 12 placing. Lamar University defended its team title with a 4-stroke victory over hosts Oral Roberts. The Cardinals shot a tournament-low 293 en route to a 32-over par 896.
Starting today’s final round on the 13th hole, Schwienteck made the turn at 2-over par before suffering her only double bogey of the tournament on the par 4 second hole. She rebounded quickly with a birdie on the next hole and made birdie on holes 7 and 11.
Freshman Kate Tran (Arlington, Texas) was second on the team in scoring after posting rounds of 79-79-77 for a 19-over par 235. Her 5-over 77 today was the best of her short 6-round career at UTA.
Junior Rachel Phillips (Plano, Texas) posted scores of 76-83-78 for a 21-over par 237. She finished in a tie for 53rd and tied as the top individual golfer in the tournament who’s score did not count toward their team’s total.
Madigan Murray (McKinney, Texas) registered scores of 83-80-81 to finish in a tie for 78th in the 90-golfer field with a 28-over par. She finished one stroke ahead of redshirt freshman Allison Wade (Arlington, Texas), who tied for 81st.
Sydney Garber (Rockwall, Texas) finished tied for 85th at 32-over par.
The team has a quick turnaround following the ORU Shootout as it travels to Palm Desert, Calif. for the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Sept. 30 - Oct. 1 at Classic Club. The team concludes its fall schedule with a pair of tournaments in Arkansas, the Fred Marx Invitational on Oct. 16-17 in Little Rock and the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic on Oct. 29-31 in Hot Springs Village.
