PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Freshman Ava Schwienteck rebounded from a tough second round to lead the UTA women’s golf team team for the third straight tournament as the Mavericks concluded play at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate at Classic Club.
A native of Magnolia, Texas, Schwienteck turned in a 4-over par 76 in today’s final round to finish the third event in program history in a tie for 39th place among the 76-golfer field. Her score today was tied for eighth lowest in the field.
As a team, UTA finished in 11th place, just six strokes behind CSU Bakersfield and 27 strokes ahead of the University of North Dakota. Santa Clara University claimed the team title at 34-over par, two strokes ahead of runner-up Hawai’i.
SCU sophomore Kristin Le claimed medalist honors with rounds of 77-73.69 for a 3-over par 219.
Junior Rachel Phillips (Plano, Texas) finished in a tie for 45th place at 27-over par, while Allison Wade (Arlington, Texas) posted a final round 79, her lowest round of the tournament, to tie with Northern Arizona’s Loren Skibba for 56th place.
Kate Tran (Arlington, Texas) tied teammate Madigan Murray (McKinney, Texas) for 62nd place, while Sydney Garber (Rockwall, Texas), playing as an individual, concluded the tournament in sole possession of 68th place.
The Mavericks conclude their fall schedule with a pair of tournaments in Arkansas this month - the Fred Marx Invitational on Oct. 16-17 in Little Rock and the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic on Oct. 29-31 in Hot Springs Village.
