MONROE, La. -- Freshman Ava Schwienteck sits just four strokes off the lead and the UTA women’s golf team is in sixth place after the first day of competition in the ULM Fred Marx Invitational at DeSiard Country Club.
The Mavericks enter tomorrow’s final round two strokes ahead of seventh place McNeese State and six ahead of Incarnate Word. Murray State leads the 12-team at 28-over par, 17 strokes ahead of runner-up ULM. Lamar and South Alabama are in third and fourth places, respectively.
UTA leads the field in birdies with 15 and is third among the participating in par 5 scoring. Schwienteck is tied for the tournament lead in par 5 scoring a 4.88 and her seven birdies is also tied for the most in the field.
Schwienteck (Magnolia, Texas), turned in scores of 76-75 in today’s first two rounds and enters tomorrow at 7-over par, just two strokes behind runner-up Scarlett Eaton of ULM. Lamar’s Elodie Chapelet leads the 70-golfer field with a 3-over par.
Redshirt freshman Allison Wade (Arlington, Texas) and teammate Sydney Garber (Rockwall, Texas) are tied for 39th place. Garber is playing as an individual and her scores to not count toward the team total.
Madigan Murray (McKinney, Texas) enters tomorrow’s final round in a tie for 51st place.
Following this week’s tournament, the Mavericks will conclude their inaugural fall season at the Little Rock Women’s Golf Classic, scheduled for Oct. 29-31 at Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs Village, Ark. The team will resume its season on Feb. 12 at the Texas State Invitational.
