HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Ark. -- A strong front nine helped the UT Arlington women's golf team finish in a tie for seventh place after the first round of the Little Rock Golf Classic at Diamante Country Club.
A pair of Mavericks are among the top 10 on the individual leaderboard with Ava Schwienteck (Magnolia, Texas) and Allison Wade (Arlington, Texas) each posting a 1-over par 73 for a tie for seventh place on the 6,076-yard Diamante CC golf course.
As a team, the Mavericks are tied with Utah Valley for seventh place among the 14-team field at 16-over par. The two teams are just one stroke behind Houston Baptist and UTEP for fifth place and just three strokes behind Jacksonville State and Missouri State in the runner-up position.
Sam Houston State leads the tournament at 10-over par, while Bearkat junior Jenna Phillips leads the medalist competition at 2-over par. The Austin, Texas native is just one stroke ahead of ULM sophomore Shani White. Four golfers are tied for third place at even par.
UTA is scheduled to begin its second round tomorrow at 9:50 a.m. (CDT) off the 10th tee with groups going off every 10 minutes. The Mavericks are paired with golfers from Utah Valley and Stephen F. Austin. Junior Rachel Phillips (Plano, Texas) is playing as an individual, will start tomorrow on the first tee at 10:40 a.m. and is paired with Monica Lieving from from Arkansas State and Sally Fridstrom from Central Arkansas.
Schwienteck started brightly, going 2-under over her first five holes with three birdies and a bogey on nos. 10-14. After a pair of bogeys to go back to even par before making the turn, she rebounded with birdies on nos. 1 and 3. Consecutive bogeys on her final two holes put Schwienteck at 1-over. Her five birdies in the round were the most in the 81-golfer field.
Wade, the only redshirt freshman on UTA's roster, took a more consistent route to her 1-over par round. She started the day with four pars before dropping a pair of shots on holes 14 and 17 to fall to 2-over. But, a birdie on 18 put her at 1-over heading to the first hole. She went even par on the front nine with a pair of bogeys and birdies on nos. 4 and 8.
Freshman Kate Tran (Arlington, Texas) is tied for 19th place at 5-over par. She rebounded from a 4-over par on the back nine with eight pars and a bogey on the front.
Sydney Garber (Rockwall, Texas) also played better on the front en route to a 9-over par and is tied for 65th place. Following a difficult back nine, she went 2-over on holes 1-9. Garber is tied with Phillips, who went 4-over on the front before pulling back a stroke with a birdie on No. 10. Freshman Madigan Murray (McKinney, Texas) is tied for 80th place at 16-over par.
