HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Ark. - Freshman Madigan Murray rebounded from a tough first round to register a 6-over par 78 today to pace the inaugural UT Arlington women's golf team at the Little Rock Golf Classic at Diamante Golf Club.
Murray, a native of McKinney, Texas, shot 4-over par on the back nine before registering seven pars and just two bogeys on the front. She moved up five places on the leaderboard heading into tomorrow's final round.
As a team, UTA sits in 14th place, just two strokes behind Northern Iowa and six back of Sun Belt Conference rival ULM. Central Arkansas leads the 15-team field at 25-over par, one stroke ahead of runner-up Jacksonville State and four in front of UTEP.
The field returns to the 6,076-yard, par 72 course for tomorrow's final round. UTA golfers are scheduled to open the shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on holes 14-17 and are paired with Northern Iowa and UTRGV. Junior Rachel Phillips (Plano, Texas) is participating in the tournament as an individual, will begin on hole 18 and is paired with with Grayson Gladden and Emma Miller of Arkansas State.
Freshman Ava Schwienteck (Magnolia, Texas) is UTA's leading golfer, sitting in a tie for 31st overall at 10-over par. Classmate Kate Tran (Arlington, Texas) is tied for 50th at 14-over, while Phillips is tied for 61st at 16-over par.
The Little Rock Golf Classic serves as the final event of the fall season for the first-ever season of women's golf at UT Arlington. The Mavericks have played in four previous events with a pair of top 10 finishes.
The team returns to competition on Feb. 12 at the Texas State Invitational at Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle, Texas. The annual Sun Belt Conference Championships are scheduled for April 16-18 at Raven Golf Club in Miramar Beach, Fla.
