ARLINGTON, Texas -- The inaugural UTA women's golf team will officially open competition this fall with a tournament schedule that will provide a solid test for the young group of Maverick golfers.
The Mavs will play five events during the fall season and six in the spring, culminating with the annual Sun Belt Conference Championships at Raven Golf Club in Miramar Beach, Fla. Each of the 11 events will contribute toward the team's national ranking, which determines at-large entrants into the NCAA Championships. The Sun Belt team champion earns automatic qualification into the NCAA Tournament.
"There is no question our team will be challenged since this will be the first season of Division I college golf for each of the golfers," said UTA director of golf Stuart Deane. "But, we have some excellent young players in this group and I have every confidence they will be ready to compete in every event they play. As the first team in program history, they will make history every time they play and they will be setting the standard for every team that follows."
UTA will open the season Sept. 16-18 at the USA Intercollegiate in Mobile, Ala. Hosted by Sun Belt rival South Alabama, the tournament will be played at Magnolia Grove, which was named one of the top 50 public courses by Golf World Magazine and has hosted LPGA Tour events.
A week later, the Mavericks travel across the state of Texas' northern border to compete in the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout Sept. 25-26 at Meadowbrook Country Club in Tulsa. UTA closes out the month at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate, scheduled for Sept. 30 -- Oct. 1 at Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
The team will compete in its penultimate fall tournament on Oct. 16-17 at the Fred Marx Invitational at Bayou DeSiard Country Club in Monroe, La. The fall season will conclude Oct. 29-31 at the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic at Diamante Country Club in Hot Springs Village, Ark.
Following the winter break, the Mavericks return to competition on Feb. 12-13 at the Texas State Invitational at Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle before traveling to Kiawah Island, S.C. for the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Classic on Feb. 25-27.
The team will play two tournaments in March, starting with its only local appearance of the season at the ORU/SFA Spring Break Shootout on March 19-21 at Trophy Club (Texas) Country Club. UTA will return to Arkansas for the second time on March 26-27 for the Little Rock / A-State Invitational at Maumelle (Ark.) Country Club.
Before heading to Florida for the Sun Belt Championships, UTA will play its final regular season tournament of the season at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.
