PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Following a short break, the UTA women’s golf team takes its longest road trip of the season this weekend when it competes in the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate at Classic Club.

The Mavericks, playing only the third tournament in program history, joins a 12-team field that includes programs from CSU Bakersfield, CSUN, Hawai’i, Montana, North Dakota, Northern Arizona, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, UC Riverside, Utah Valley and host Wyoming.

UTA will feature a lineup that includes Ava Schwienteck (Magnolia, Texas), Kate Tran (Arlington, Texas), Rachel Phillips (Plano, Texas), Madigan Murray (McKinney, Texas) and Allison Wade (Arlington, Texas). Sydney Garber (Rockwall, Texas) will compete in the tournament as an individual. The four low individual scores count toward the team’s score each round.

The field is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. (CDT) each morning. The 54-hole event will feature two rounds tomorrow with a single round on Sunday. UTA is paired with golfers from Hawai’i, Santa Clara and Wyoming for tomorrow’s rounds.

“Every tournament is a learning experience for our team and, frankly, for the coaches,” said UTA director of golf Stuart Deane. “The girls went into the first tournament with no expectations. In the second tournament, they had increased expectations and quickly learned that each golf course and each tournament presents difference challenges.

“This week, they have a short turnaround from the last tournament so time management and taking care of their academic responsibilities is going to be very important. Every day presents an opportunity to learn, grow and improve on and off the golf course.”

Designed by Arnold Palmer, Classic Club is configured at 6,097 yards and par 72 for the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate. The golf course has served as the host site for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and features rolling terrain, wide landing areas, 30 acres of water features and 14 bridges.

Following the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate, the Mavericks concludes their 5-event fall schedule with a pair of tournaments in Arkansas - the Fred Marx Invitational on Oct. 16-17 in Little Rock and the Little Rock Women's Golf Classic on Oct. 29-31 in Hot Springs Village.
