MIAMI, Fla. - UT Arlington fell 3-1 to Pittsburgh in its opening game and was swept 4-0 by host Florida International in the nightcap at the FIU Invitational on Friday.
Against the Panthers, UTA jumped on the board first in the bottom of the third, when Moore drew the walk and advanced to third on a single to center from Jones. Center fielder, April Clougherty singled to plate Moore and give the Mavs the 1-0 advantage.
Pittsburgh evened the playing field in the fourth, with a Sam Card run on a Kayla Zinger single.
The Panthers sealed the win with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.
In the Mavs second game of the day, the offense struggled as they left eight runners stranded.
The Golden Panthers capitalized on strong pitching from Kasey Barret and three Maverick errors to pull out the 4-0 victory.
The Mavs will look to rebounds when they face first-time opponent Virginia Tech at 10 a.m. tomorrow, followed by a 12:30 p.m. meeting with Missouri.
