MAVS SHUTOUT IN DAY TWO OF FIU INVITATIONAL

MIAMI, Fla. - UT Arlington softball fell in back-to-back shutouts to ranked opponents in the second day of action at the Florida International Invitational on Saturday.
The Mavs (0-4) started the day with a 1-0 loss to No. 15 ranked Virginia Tech. Senior Laura Jones took the loss in a complete game on the mound recording four strikeouts and fanning three hits.
The Hokies run came in the fourth inning, when Erin Ota drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on Kelsey Hoffman's sacrifice bunt. Jessica Everhart drove her in with a double down the left field line.
In its second game of the day and fourth in two days, UTA was shutout 4-0 by No. 21 ranked Missouri. Sophomore Heather Fortenberry recorded the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season.
Lindsey Ubrun, who reached base in the fourth inning on a walk, advanced to second after Fortenberry gave up back-to-back walks that awarded Megan Christopher first base. After hitting Missouri's next batter the bases were loaded for outfielder Julie Silver. Silver hit a two RBI single that plated Ubrun and Christopher for the first two runs of the game.
Missouri scored its third run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Freshman Shana White drew the walk and scored on Ubrun's single through the left side. Amanda Renth hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh for the Tiger's fourth run of the game.
UTA will closeout play in Miami on Sunday at 11:30 a.m., with a rematch against FIU Invitational host Florida International.
