ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas Tech spoiled the UT Arlington home opener as the Red Raiders powered four home runs on the way to a 12-5 win at Allan Saxe Field on Tuesday.
The setback pushed UTA's overall record to 3-2, while Texas Tech improved to 2-3 on the season. Texas Tech's Allison Knopp powered two of the team's home runs, finishing with a game-high three hits. Texas Tech would score 11 runs over the final three innings. UTA would plate four in the seventh, but were unable to get any closer.
"Tonight's game challenged us in a lot of ways, mentally and emotionally. I'm not going to say we did a great job, but we didn't quit at the end," UTA coach Peejay Brun said. "It also showed a lot of things we need to work on. There were some missed signals in there, a lot of mental mistakes and we only have one practice this week. So we're going to have to fix that before we get on the road and fly to Florida."
Whitney Walton and Sandra Mendoza would lead UTA with a pair of hits each as UTA knocked eight total. Walton would provide a run and also drive in two. JoJo Valencia was hit with her first loss of the season after going 4.1 innings in her third start of the season, she went to 2-1 after striking out four and being hit for five earned runs.
The Mavericks will hit the road for a five-game trip through Florida, playing in a conjoined tournament with hosts Jacksonville and North Florida. Action gets underway on Friday against Canisius at 12 p.m. CT.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After the first of two homers from Knopp in the top of the second, UTA would pick up a run off a Mendoza single. However, UTA would look to get another run, but were thrown out at the plate to strand two.
The teams were quiet for the third and fourth before a string of innings with multiple runs started for the Red Raiders in the fifth. Six hits compounded by an error helped four run across the dish in the fifth, three runs were scored in the sixth and what proved to be important in the seventh were the final four Tech runs.
UTA battled in the final frame to send four across. Krista Rude had an infield single to bring in Cy'Andria Newton, while Walton's double to center brought in another pair. A wild pitch scored Walton to close out the day's scoring.
