ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington softball came up short in the championship game of the UTA Maverick Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.
"I think this group is maturing," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "They are continually learning from their mistakes and gaining confidence. Missouri State run-ruled us earlier in this tournament and here we are competing."
The Mavericks were beaten 3-0 by Missouri State, dropping UTA to 6-4 on the season.
Missouri State's Heather Duckworth tripled down the right field line to score two runs in the bottom of the second inning to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.
UT Arlington put two runners on in the top of the fifth with no outs. Britnea Barilli hit a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third, but the Mavericks didn't capitalize as the Bears got out of the jam.
With two outs and down 3-0 in the WHAT inning, freshman Shelbi Sikes singled to right field. Barilli singled to left, but the threat eneded there.
The Mavericks begin the UTA Hilton Invitational on Thursday as they face Texas Tech at 7 p.m. at Allan Saxe Field.
