JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The pitching combination of Alyssa Chavez and Randi Phillips combined to blank Canisius on Saturday, helping take the Day 2 opener 5-0 at Pruitt SB Complex. The Mavs will complete the day's action at North Florida at 4 p.m.
Chavez and Phillips gave up a combined one hit over seven innings as Chavez went to 2-0, while Phillps earned the three-inning save. The tandem struck out just one, but only allowed three walks.
The win pushed UTA's record to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in tournament play in Jacksonville. UTA knocked around eight hits, led by a 2-for-3 game from shortstop Whitney Walton. The Mavs scored their five runs over the course of three frames between the third and the fifth.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
A leadoff single from Canisius started off the game, but that was all that would be in the hit column for the remainder as she was stranded a third to end the threat.
UTA picked up its first hit in the third as Sandra Mendoza opened scoring with a two-out single to bring around Brittany Wyllie.
The bats got hot again in the fourth as UTA knocked around three singles. Walton reached on a lead-off single through the middle, advanced to third on an error and came into score with Reagan Wright providing another base knock into center.
The Mavs broke open the game in the fifth with another string of hits. Krista Rude got things started with her RBI single in the infield. She'd come into score in the next at-bat with Walton tripling to right-center field and Aileen Garcia brought her home with another infield single, this time to second.
