San Marcos, Texas - UT Arlington started off the weekend with two victories, including a win over Texas Southern 9-0.
The Mavericks' bats were hot with the team making contact with 17 hits throughout the game. The team racked up runs early, scoring seven runs in the first inning.
Erica LeFlore and Hillary Steed each went yard in the first inning, while Sarah Higginbotham and Samantha Kennedy waited until the fifth to each hit a home run and score the last two runs of the game.
Sophomore Callie Collins pitched five innings allowing only three hits and no walks.
"We played pretty well," UT Arlington head coach Debbie Hedrick said. "We played solid defense and hit well, but we left too many runners on base."
The team's second victory was grasped with a win over the University of Dayton Flyers 5-2.
Erica LeFlore hit a home run in the second inning to tie up the game at two all. An illegal pitch by Dayton allowed the Mavericks to pull ahead 3-2. The Mavericks added two additional runs after an error with the bases loaded.
"Teri (Lyles) threw a good game, as well as Callie," Hedrick said. "I am pleased with the two wins, especially considering the rainy, wet conditions."
With two more wins under the Mavericks' belt the team resumes action Saturday at 7 p.m. with a game against Rutgers. UTA is 5-2.
