JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - UT Arlington closed out the weekend with a 3-2 record after falling to Jacksonville U 2-0 on Sunday at the Pruitt SB Complex.
A pair of runs in the third were all that the Dolphins needed in the weekend's finale with both teams knocking around seven hits. Krista Rude led the offensive effort with a 2-for-3 day. Despite the Sunday setback, it was a weekend of positives with wins over Providence and Jacksonville on Friday and Canisius on Saturday.
"We learned a lot about our team and the fight that we have in us this week," UTA coach Peejay Brun said. "We have faced a lot of adversity this season and the team has stepped right up to face the challenge. We will use this weekend as a learning experience as we continue to improve and get back to action this week with some good opponents at home."
Aileen Garcia and Reagan Wright had strong weekends at the plate. Garcia had a team-high six hits - three coming on Friday against Providence, knocked in four RBI and hit a home run. Wright finished with five hits and five RBI with her three-run homer against Jacksonville providing the game winner in Friday's contest.
In the circle, Randi Phillips went 2-1 in five appearances (three starts) with a save. She tossed two complete games and only gave up four earned runs. JoJo Valencia pitched in two games, making one start and being knocked for one loss, while Alyssa Chavez earned a shutout in a one hitter in a combined effort with Phillips.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Despite a combined three hits in the first two innings, all singles, UTA could not come up with the crucial hit it needed to take the lead. The Dolphins were able to break through in the third as three hits and two errors helped in a pair of runs.
UTA combined for another three hits in the fourth and fifth, putting a runner on second in the fifth before a ground out to short ended the threat. The Mavs attempted a two-out rally in the seventh, but a liner to left ended the game, stranding a runner on base.
