ARLINGTON, Texas –The UT Arlington softball team bounced back in a big way on Friday night, defeating the Creighton Jays 8-0 at Allan Saxe Field in five innings.
The Mavericks (7-5) split their first two games of the UTA Hilton Invitational and face Creighton and UMKC in a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
"I said last night that it was just a matter of time where someone stepped up with runners in scoring position," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "We have been working on it all week and they finally swung the bat freely. There is a lot of confidence up there and they did a good job today."
Callie Collins struck out eight in her five innings pitched, allowing just two hits and walking one.
UTA picked up a run in the opening frame for the first score of the game. Jasmine Tanksley singled with two outs, stole second and was brought home with a double off of the right-field wall from Stokes.
The Mavericks' bats came alive for a six-spot in the third to increase the lead to 7-0. The one-out rally opened with back-to-back singles by Michele and Stokes. Villanueva singled down the right-field line to score both on the next at-bat.
Schaefer battled deep into the count before she sent her first homer of her career over the wall in center. A hit batter and a walk continued UTA's, rally and a double by Barilli off of the wall in left padded the lead.
"It felt awesome," Schaefer said of the team's big inning. "Getting one run is awesome, but getting six is even better. Finally our bats are clicking. We have put in a lot of work all season and things are starting to click. We know how to swing and tonight we showed it."
Barilli ended the game two innings later with two runners on base. Her single up the middle scored Marisa Datko to complete the run-rule win.
