SAN MARCOS, Texas — UT Arlington fell twice in Day 2 of the Texas Shootout, dropping to 5-4 on the season and 1-3 in the tournament.
“I think our girls are very positive about how things have gone so far and we’re working hard,” UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox. “We’ve come into a lot of close, games and sometimes we’ve come out on top and sometimes we haven’t.
“I think we need to work on getting some quality at-bats with runner in scoring position.”
North Texas 4, UT Arlington 3
Teri Lyles doubled in the top of the second with one out, but the Mavericks picked up two more outs to strand Lyles at the end of the inning.
North Texas doubled and homered in the bottom of the third.
North Texas hit a solo homerun to deep right field in the bottom of the fourth to give the Mean Green a 4-0 lead.
Texas Tech 2, UT Arlington 1
The first three innings of the games remained scoreless until Texas Tech crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth for the first run of the game.
Lyles reached first on an error by Tech’s shortstop and Meagan Michele gounded out to advance Lyles to second, but the Mavs were unable to score before the end of the fourth inning.
The Red Raiders had runners on first and second with two outs when Kelsi Kettler singled and drove in another run for Tech.
Villanueva grabbed a hit for the Mavericks while Texas Tech had 5 hits and three walks.
Lyles picked up her first loss of the season and drops to 4-1 overall. Callie Collins drops to 1-2 after losing to North Texas.
The Mavericks will play Sunday, Feb. 24 in their final game of the Texas Shootout. Time and opponent is TBA.
