Softball picks up 6-1 win over Centenary

The UT Arlington softball team finished day one of the UT Arlington Classic with a 1-1 record. The Mavericks recorded a 6-1 win over Centenary and ended the day with a 3-0 loss to Tulsa. UTA is now 6-6 on the overall.
Centenary at UT Arlington
Collins went the distance, allowing only one run on four hits and limiting the Ladies of Centenary to a .154 batting average for the game. The freshman leads the team with 34 strikeouts.
With Collins pitching solid throughout the game, the Mavericks bats came alive in the second inning. UTA scattered six hits that included back-to-back home runs from Stephanie Gonzalez and Collom which led to a five run inning.
UT Arlington also drove in a solo run in the first frame following a single by Taylor Zink that scored Gonzalez.
Senior Collom connected on her fourth home run of the season and 28th of her career. Collom finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. She was one of two Mavs to finish with a multi-hit performance.
Zink also finished with a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. As a team, UT Arlington connected on nine hits to the Ladies four.
Freshman Gonzalez connected on her first home run of the season in the second inning and finished 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. ¬¬
Centenary's Reggie Salvatore (0-1) took the loss pitching 1.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and walking three. Lynsi Unruh pitched the final 4.1 innings, allowing zero runs on three hits.
Tulsa at UT Arlington
Lyles pitched six complete innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out four Golden Hurricane batters.
UT Arlington had several chances to score but struggled to produce a run, leaving five runs stranded.
Tulsa connected on a run in the fourth and a pair of runs in the fifth innings.
The Mavericks continue softball action tomorrow when they face Creighton University tomorrow at 1 p.m.
