SB: Mavs split their second day of play in the UT Arlington Classic

Arlington, Texas - The second day of the UT Arlington Classic started off with a win for the Houston Baptist Huskies, as they beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff and clinched the No. 1 seed heading into the semifinals.
UTA fell in its first game Saturday, 3-2, against Drake. Courtney Zink hit a single in the third to drive in a run, giving the Mavericks 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs. In the bottom of the fourth the Mavericks drove in senior Charne Office to give UT Arlington the 2-0 lead.
The Bulldog’s Craddock answer back in the top of the fifth with a three-run home run and the Mavericks were unable to put any more runs on the board.
"It's early in the season, so overall I'm pleased," UT Arlington coach Debbie Hedrick said. "My challenge to my team is for them to learn from their mistakes and improve each game."
The Mavericks faced Drake in the first round of the semifinals play and defeated the Bulldogs 3-2.
UT Arlington put runners on early in the third inning and catcher Erica LeFlore hit a double, driving in two runs.The Mavericks picked up another run when Stephanie Gonzalez rounded third after an error on the first baseman.
Drake’s Nybo answered back in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run home run, cutting the Mavericks’ lead to one, but UT Arlington was able to hang on for the win.
"Offensively we need to stay agresive, confident and score our runners," Hedrick said. "We're leaving too many in scoring positions. We need to sharpen up our defense and my pitchers are alway expected to be consistent and give us an opportunity to win the game."
The second semifinal of the day featured the No. 1 seed Houston Baptist against the No. 4 seed Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The game ended in the bottom of the eighth with a 4-3 HBU victory.
The Mavericks will face Houston Baptist in the Finals on Sunday at noon.
