UTA SOFTBALL FALLS IN EXTRA INNING AFFAIR

LAKE CHARLES, La. - McNeese State's Shayla Cormier hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning in the first game of a Southland Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon as the Cowgirls edged past Texas-Arlington 2-1.
The Lady Mavericks pushed one run across in the top of the first. Katie Singleton reached first and advanced to second on an error by the Cowgirls shortstop before moving to third on a ground out. Dee Jay Nelson plated the run with a sinlge up the middle to give UTA a 1-0 advantage.
With the game tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth frame pinch hitter Rachel Phillips singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch by UTA starter Jill Garro. Cromier singled up the middle to plate Phillips from second. Singleton's throw from center field was just wide, allowing Phillips to score the game-winner.
Garro (2-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on 10 hits in 8.2 innings of work. Autumn Petrino paced the Lady Mavs with two hits.
Texas-Arlington and the Cowgirls will play the nightcap of today's doubleheader before closing out the three-game set Sunday at 1 p.m.
