Arlington, Texas - The Mavericks won the UT Arlington Classic when they defeated the Houston Baptist Huskies 4-1 Sunday at Allan Saxe Field.
UT Arlington took the lead in the top of the seventh when Samantha Kennedy singled and reached second on an error by the centerfielder, while also driving a run in to give the Mavericks a 2-1 edge. Stephanie Gonzalez hit a two-run homer giving UT Arlington a three-run cushion heading into the bottom of the seventh.
"We had good clutch hitting, strong pitching and strong defense," UT Arlington head coach Debbie Hedrick said. "As a team, we were energetic and we showed a lot of fight, so I'm very pleased."
Teri Lyles got the win, improving her record to 5-2 and the Mavericks improved their overall record to 8-4. UT Arlington has a few days off before heading to Lubbock, Texas.
The final day of the UT Arlington Classic began with a consolation game between No. 4 seed Arkansas-Pine Bluff and No. 3 seed Drake. The Bulldogs picked up their fifth win of the season as they defeated the Golden Lions 15-0 in five innings.
Drake took the lead early, scoring five runs in the first inning. The team finished with 12 hits and 14 RBI including a three-run home run by Hayley Nybo, who completed the game with eight RBI.
