THIBODEAUX, La. - UT Arlington softball picked up its first Southland conference wins of the season, winning 5-1 in the first game of the doubleheader and 5-0 in the nightcap over Nicholls State on Saturday at Colonels Softball Complex.
With the wins UTA improves to 5-9 on the season and 2-3 in SLC action, while Nicholls State falls to 6-11 and 1-4 on the season.
In game one, the Mavericks win was powered by a three run fourth inning. Two runs came off a Brittany Stevens single down the right field line to bring home April Clougherty and Samantha Chumchal assisted by a Colonel throwing error. Katie Jones followed with a single to centerfield that plated Stevens to round out the inning.
Senior Laura Jones (2-5) picked up the win in the circle for UTA as she went the distance allowing six hits and one run while fanning seven. Sophomore Brittany Washington led the Mavs offense going 2-for-3, scoring two runs with a homerun and an RBI in game one.
Krystalin Ensminger was tabbed with the loss for the Colonels as she threw 3.2 innings allowing eight hits and five runs while only striking out two.
In the second game, freshman Whitney Simpson hit the game winner, a homerun over the centerfield fence, in the second inning.
Highlighting the second game for UTA was pitcher sophomore Cara Hulme (1-2) as she picked up her first win of the 2008 season by throwing all seven innings, only allowing four hits, and fanning 11 in the win. Hulme also helped her own cause in the circle as she finished 2-for-3 batting with two runs scored and one RBI.
The Mavs and Colonels will conclude the SLC series on Sunday at noon at the Colonels Softball Complex.
