GAME 1 RECAP:
ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington dropped its home opener and first game of the 2013 UTA Classic 5-1 to No. 19 Tulsa at Allan Saxe Field Friday afternoon.
The Golden Hurricanes scored in four consecutive innings between the second and fifth and the Mavericks had just four hits in the game to fall to 6-5 on the season.
Tulsa opened up scoring in the second inning following a double by Haley Henshaw to start the inning. Henshaw would advance to third on the next at-bat and then scored on a Cierra Hughes grounder to the pitcher.
Tulsa struck again in the third to expand its lead. Jill Barrett opened up the inning with a homerun to left field. Samantha Cobb then reached on a walk and scored on the next at bat when Lacey Middlebrooks doubled to left field.
Aimee Creger picked up her seventh win of the season and improved to 7-1 overall for Tulsa. Creger allowed just four hits in the game and struck out eight. Picking up the loss for UTA was Teri Lyles who fell to 5-2 on the season.
Barrett had a game-high four hits in the contest with one run and an RBI. Lyles had each of UTA's first two hits in the game to lead for the Mavericks.
Lyles picked up the Mavericks first run in the bottom of seventh on a home run over the left field wall for her first of the season.
GAME 2 RECAP:
ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington (6-6) was unable to get its offense going in the second game of the 2013 UTA Classic, and as a result the Mavericks fell 3-1 to Creighton (6-4) Friday afternoon to suffer a tournament-opening sweep.
The Mavericks were limited to one run in each of its Friday games to open the tournament, and had just seven hits over the double dip.
"We worked hard all week, but we came out flat," head coach Kristie Foxsaid. "Their pitcher saw that and came right at us, and we didn't make an adjustment. We've had a lot of adversity this year and have come back from it each time. We'll come back tomorrow ready to play."
The Mavericks were able to strike first in the opening inning after a two-out rally that began with no one on. Meagan Michele started the uprising by poking a single to right. She eventually came around to score on a base hit from Jolene Schaefer.
However, after Schaefer's knock, the Mavericks were unable to log another hit until two outs in the seventh. UTA managed just one base runner from innings two through six.
In the circle, Callie Collins(1-4) fanned five hitters over the first two frames, but was dinged for a solo homer by Bri Lingl that knotted the score 1-1 in the second.
She struck out two more batters in the third before finding trouble in the fourth. Alexis Cantuhit a tape-measure homer to right to start the inning and Lingl followed by missing her second homer of the day by two feet. Her double that banged off the top of the wall led to the Bluejays' third run and gave the squad a 3-1 lead.
Collins completed all seven innings, yielding three runs on five hits. She walked one and struck out nine.
The Mavericks will continue play in the tournament Saturday at 1 p.m. against Lamar.
OTHER GAME RECAPS:
Game #3: Tulsa defeated Lamar by a 7-4 final on Friday evening. Tulsa led 4-0 before Lamar scored four runs in the top of the fifth. Tulsa came back with one in the bottom half and two in the sixth for the triumph. The win pushed the Golden Hurricane to 2-0 in the UTA Classic, while the Cardinals dropped to 0-1.
Game #4: Creighton moved to 2-0 in the UTA Classic by virtue of a 10-3 victory over Lamar in the nightcap of day one. The Bluejays used a pair of four-run innings, the first and the fourth, to cruise to the win. Lamar fell to 0-2 in tournament action.
