ARLINGTON - Texas - In the first match up in Southland conference play, UT Arlington split a double-header with Texas State on Tuesday.

UTA (10-7, 1-1) won the first game 3-1 while losing the second game 3-0.

In the first game, the long balls helped bail out the offense as UTA connected on two home runs for their three runs. The second home run came off the bat of catcher Samantha Chumchal. Her two run shot in the top of the seventh broke a 1-1 tie.

Rebecca Collom kept the seventh inning alive however, singling to left field with two outs before Chumchal delivered the winning blow.

The home run allowed freshman pitcher Teri Lyles (5-2) to pick up her fifth win, going seven innings allowing three hits, one run and striking out three while only walking two.

The second game wasn't as fortunate to the Mavericks as the bats fell silent in the 3-0 shutout loss. UTA only managed two hits throughout the game, getting dominated by Texas State (4-10, 1-1) pitcher Anne Marie Taylor.

In addition to the two hits, Taylor only allowed three walks while striking out eight. Chumchal and pitcher Cara Hulme were the two Mavericks who collected the hits.

Hulme picked up the loss, dropping her to 5-5. Hulme pitched well enough for the win however, giving up the three runs on six hits while striking out six and walking three.

UTA finishes the series with Texas State tomorrow at 2 p.m.
