TUCSON, Arizona – UT Arlington softball defeated Valparaiso 1-0 on the final day of the Wildcat Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona.
The Mavericks improved to 11-8 on the season with the victory in the tight rubber match.
Callie Collins moved to 6-4 for the year after holding Valparaiso to just two hits in the win. In 7.0 innings pitched, she recorded five strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Britnea Barilli led the offensive effort with two of UTA's four hits and the only RBI between both teams. Jasmine Tanksley, the solo run scored, Nina Villanueva and Jolene Schaefer recorded the other three Maverick hits in the game.
Villanueva broke up the hitless contest against Valparaiso with a leadoff single in the bottom of the second but advanced no further. The Crusaders threatened in the third after back-to-back Maverick errors allowed Valparaiso on base for the first time but Collins pitched her way out of the jam.
A single from Barilli in the third fame plated Tanksley, who reached on a bunt single, to give UTA a 1-0 lead. Collins did not allow a Valparaiso hit in the contest until the fifth inning with a single to the left side but the Crusader would not advance to second.
The Mavericks attempted to extend their lead in the sixth after Schaefer pushed Meagan Michele into scoring position with a single, but a fly ball to right would end the inning. A two-out triple from Valparaiso, just its second hit of the game, endangered UTA's close lead but a strikeout from Collins gave the Mavs a 1-0 win.
UTA returns to action at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic in Lubbock on Friday. The Mavs will face New Mexico State at 10 a.m. before taking on Northern Colorado at 3 p.m. For live in-game updates at the tournament, follow the Mavericks on Twitter (@UTAMavs).
