Denton, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team closed out the North Texas Classic with a 5-1 win against Louisiana Tech Sunday afternoon. UTA finished the tournament with a 3-2 record and improved their overall record to 14-9.

Rebecca Collom, Stephanie Gonzalez, and Taylor Zink led the Mavericks offensively in the tournament. Zink batted .467, connecting on seven hits, including a double and drove in three RBI.

Collom and Gonzalez each finished batting .400 and both connected on a double a piece. Collom recorded her fifth home run of the season and 29th of her career against Wichita State.

Freshman Callie Collins went 2-1 in the tournament and finished with a 0.78 ERA in 18 innings pitched. She recorded 18 strikeouts and held her opponents to a .206 batting average. For the season, Collins is 8-2 with a 1.13 ERA in 68.1 innings pitched.

In their final game of the North Texas Classic, freshman Collins (8-2) got the start in the pitching circle and helped the Mavs to a 5-1 win against Louisiana Tech. The true freshman recorded her sixth complete game and allowed only one run on four hits while striking out 11.

Louisiana Tech scored their only run in the game in the first inning and couldn't plate another run, leaving six runners stranded.

With LA Tech leading 1-0, Collom tied the game by ripping a double to left center, scoring Ashley McCarroll. McCarroll reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.

Gonzalez put the Mavericks on top 3-1 in the second with a two-RBI double to center field. UTA continued to add runs, picking up a solo run in the fourth and another run in sixth.

Gonzalez and Courtney Zink recorded multi-hit performances. Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBI while C. Zink went 2-for-3 with a triple and RBI.



UT Arlington gets back into conference action with a three-game series against Southeastern Louisiana beginning Saturday, March 12. Game times are set for 3 and 5 p.m. on Saturday followed by a noon start on Sunday in Hammond, LA.
