Final Stats

MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama used a pair of walk-off hits in the seventh to sweep the opening day of Sun Belt play at Jaguar Field.

The Mavericks (9-11, 0-2 SBC) battled toe-to-toe with one of the league's top pitchers as a combination of JoJo Valencia and Randi Phillips saw both games go down to the wire. In the opener, 6.2 scoreless innings from Valencia were spoiled on a walk-off single, while Phillips' start in the second was spoiled on a game-winning home run to lead off the seventh in a 3-2 defeat.

Despite the setbacks, it was a bit of a milestone day for Sandra Mendoza. The senior's game-tying double in the fifth of Game 2 broke a tie for second in UTA history for doubles as Mendoza knocked the 40th of her career, also good for eighth in multi-base hits with 46. Mendoza finished with both RBI in Game 2, one coming on a sac-fly in the third.

UTA and South Alabama (13-11, 2-0) close their three-game series on Sunday at 10 a.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game 1 saw chances come at a premium for both teams. South Alabama's Devin Brown tossed six innings of no-hit ball before Whitney Walton knocked a double in the seventh of a scoreless game. Walton was unable to come home as UTA would leave four on overall.

South Alabama put together a two-out rally in the seventh with a single through the left getting things started. A single into right pushed the runner to third and then another base knock through the infield ended the game.

In Game 2, it was UTA that opened scoring. Mendoza's sac fly in the third brought home Curry, who opened up the inning with a single and moved her way around the bases.

South Alabama tied it up in the bottom half, helped along by a pair of walks and a two-out single into right field.

Mendoza tied things up with her double in the fifth to bring home Curry once again, but a leadoff homer in the seventh walked things off once again for the Jaguars.
