UT-Arlington senior Jill Garro scattered three hits over six innings to lead the Mavericks to a 4-1 win over Texas Southern in a college softball game at Allan Saxe Field Tuesday afternoon.
UTA (13-8) scored all the runs they would need in the third inning. Katie Jones opened the inning with a single to second base. Amanda Swofford connected on a single to center field but Jones was thrown out at third base. Autumn Petrino doubled to center field to score Swofford. Petrino advanced to third on a Dee Jay Nelson ground out to the pitcher and later scored on a balk by the starting pitcher, Christy DeLeon (1-7).
The Mavs added runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
In the fourth, Courtni Anderson tripled down the right field line and scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1. In the fifth inning, Dee Jay Nelson scored from third base on an error by shortstop Nadia Bazan.
"We didn't play very well," said UTA Softball Coach Debbie Hedrick. "We need to learn to stay aggressive no matter who we play. We are going to have to play at a higher level if we are going to compete for the conference title."
Garro (8-4) won her third straight decision and moved into fifth place on the career victories list at UTA with 45. Nicki Wilson came on in the seventh inning to close the game.
UTA returns to Southland Conference action Saturday when the Mavericks face Northwestern State in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
