SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The UT Arlington softball team defeated Seton Hall 5-1 on the third day of the San Diego Classic II.
“The girls made a conscious effort to do their best and focus from the first pitch to the last,” UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said Saturday. “Today they did a good job of that.”
The Mavericks came out swinging in the bottom of the second inning. Rebecca Stokes doubled down the left field line and Nina Villanueva followed her with a walk. Stokes scored the first run of the came when Kallan Thompson singled. Villanueva scored on a Taylor Zink double and Thompson crossed home when Seton Hall’s pitcher walked Britnea Barilli.
In the third inning with the bases loaded, freshman Jolene Schaefer hit a long fly ball, but Seton Hall’s center fielder caught the ball while falling and knocking over the temporary outfield wall. Rachel Forshaw would score, but Schaefer was called out. Seton Hall walked four batters in the inning, as the Mavericks picked up two more runs to lead 5-0.
Seton Hall scored in the top of the fifth to escape a shutout, but it wasn’t enough to win.
The Mavericks improved to 15-10 on the season and 2-2 in the San Diego Classic II. UT will face Buffalo Sunday, March 17 at 1:30 CT for its final game of the tournament.
