Mavs start strong but fall 5-3 to No. 24 Baylor
March 17, 2010
ARLINGTON - Texas - Rebecca Collom got the Mavericks on the board in the first inning with a two-run home run but it wasn't enough as UT Arlington fell to the Baylor Bears 5-3 Wednesday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.
Collom's two-run homer easily cleard the right field fence, giving UTA an early lead. Collom has homered in three of the Mavericks last four games and is ranked second on the team with five.
Freshman pitcher Teri Lyles started with two scoreless innings. Lyles (7-5) pitched her 11th complete game, allowing seven hits and five runs and striking out four.
In the third however, the Bears got three runs and added two more over the final four innings. Bears leftfielder Tiffany Wesley connected on a solo home run and finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
Erica LeFlore made it a 4-3 ball game after ripping relief pitcher Alicia Vasquez over the center field wall in the fifth frame.
Collom finished 2-for-3 and her lone RBI off her home run. She was the only Maverick to have two hits as UTA finished the game with four hits overall.
The Mavericks look to extend their five game conference winning streak this weekend as they hit the road for a three game series at Nicholls State beginning with a double-header Saturday, March 20 at 1 and 3 p.m. UTA wraps up game three against the Colonels at noon on Sunday.
