UTA SOFTBALL EDGES PAST LADY INDIANS IN NIGHTCAP
March 20, 2004
ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington exploded for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to escape a late Louisiana-Monroe threat and defeat the Lady Indians 6-2 in game two of Saturday's Southland Conference doubleheader at Allan Saxe Field. The Lady Mavericks prevailed in game one, 6-0.
April Jones hit a two-out bloop single to shallow left field for her first RBI of the season as she put the Lady Mavericks ahead 1-0 after two complete.
The UTA offense continued in the third as Katie Singleton drew a lead off walk before being sacrificed to second base by Autumn Petrino. Singleton crossed the plate on Beverly Rowan's run-producing single up the middle. Rowan, who advanced to second on the throw home and to third on a wild pitch, scored on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Haney to put UTA in front, 3-0.
ULM came alive in the top of the sixth after three straight singles put a run on the board for the Lady Indians. With runners on the corners and no outs Amy Parker hit into a double play, but allowed Heather Hanson to cross the plate and pull the Lady Indians within one run of the Lady Mavs.
UTA added an insurance run after Courtni Anderson drew a two-out walk and pinch hitter Elizabeth Brady reached on a throwing error by the ULM third baseman that sent Anderson to third. Falon Kwasnick sent Anderson home with a RBI single up the middle. The threat continued as pinch runner April Jones and Kwasnick each advanced a base on a wild pitch and a walk to Singleton loaded the bases for Petrino. Petrino connected for a two-RBI single to put UTA in front 6-2.
Freshman Lauren Hebert improved to 2-4 on the year after allowing two earned runs in a complete game effort.
Texas-Arlington and the Lady Indians will play the finale of this three-game Southland Conference series Sunday at 1 p.m.
