ARLINGTON, Texas -- Home runs by Jessica Tullos and Kim Daley and strong pitching by Monika Covington carried Stephen F. Austin to a 4-1 victory against UT Arlington on Saturday in Southland Conference softball action at Allan Saxe Field.
The Ladyjacks (22-13, 9-3 SLC) took two out of three in the series against the Mavericks (11-13, 8-7), who return to action Wednesday at 6 p.m. with a non-conference home date against North Texas.
Tullos opened the scoring with her sixth homer of the season, a two-out blast in the third inning off UTA starter Cara Hulme.
The Ladyjacks extended their lead to 3-0 in the fourth with a two-run homer by Daley, her fifth of the season. Daley drove in Candise Juarez, who came in as a pinch runner after a leadoff single to left field by Ashley Structemeyer.
SFA plated its final run in the sixth inning when Monica Hirsch singled with two outs, stole second and scored on a base hit to center field by Kendal Harper. Harper was 4-for-4 and Hirsch was 2-for-4.
Hulme (6-3), who pitched a four-hit shutout in the series opener on Friday, allowed nine hits and four runs in six innings. She fanned nine and walked three before being relieved by Cassandra Nordie in the seventh.
Covington (12-6) scattered six hits, struck out nine and walked three in a complete-game effort.
UTA scored its lone run in the fourth inning when shortstop Amanda Swofford singled, advanced to third on a double by Hulme and dashed home on a wild pitch.
