UT ARLINGTON RALLIES TO SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH UNT

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Whitney Simpson and Heather Collie hammered sixth-inning homers as UT Arlington rallied for a 10-5 victory in the second game, salvaging a split with North Texas in a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday.
The Mavericks (12-14) lost 7-1 in the first game and trailed the Mean Green (16-18) by four runs in the nightcap before UTA batted around in the fifth inning to knot the score at 5-5 and set the stage for the sixth-inning fireworks. Simpson's three-run shot to left was her third homer of the season and Collie's two-run homer was her first.
Collie was 2-for-3 with four RBIs in the victory, while Amanda Swofford was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
UTA took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game when leadoff hitter Katie Jones reached on an error, moved to third on a single by Rebecca Collom and scored when the ball rolled past left fielder Lauren Bergstrom.
Mavericks starter Cassandra Nordie took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but gave up five runs in the inning on two hits and four walks. Rebecca Waters scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Johnston to tie the game at 1-1. A bases-loaded walk by Mariza Martinez gave the Mean Green the lead and a bases-clearing single by Mallory Cantler put the Mavs into a 5-1 hole and knocked Nordie out of the game.
UTA began their comeback by scoring two runs on back-to-back bases-loaded walks by Brittany Washington and relief pitcher Heather Fortenberry. Collie drove home two more runs to tie the game at 5-5 with a single to right-center.
Fortenberry (1-2) got the victory with 2.1 innings of hitless relief. She struck out three and walked one. Jennifer Wilson (5-7) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in 1.1 innings in relief of UNT starter Kayla Lawson.
The Mean Green cranked out 13 hits in the first game. Cantler was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Courtney Bradshaw was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Kristina Fowler (5-6) pitched a three-hitter with three strikeouts and two walks.
UNT jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Cantler drove in two with a bases-loaded, two-out single to left field and Sarah Jones followed with an RBI single to second base.
The Mavericks plated their only run in the third inning on a home run to left field by Jones, her third of the season.
The Mean Green added three more runs in the fifth inning. Rebecca Waters doubled to right-center and scored on Fowler's two-out double off the wall in left-center. Bradshaw followed with a two-run smash over the fence in left field to make it 6-1.
UNT increased the margin to 7-1 in the sixth with an RBI single by Waters.
UTA starter Cara Hulme (6-4) went six innings and allowed seven runs on 13 hits. She had three walks and three strikeouts.
