ABILENE, Texas – UT Arlington softball defeated Abilene Christian 8-0 Wednesday evening at Wells Field in a six-inning run rule.
The Mavericks (16-23, 1-8 SBC) evened their record with the Wildcats at 1-1. The teams meet again April 23 in Arlington. Senior Callie Collins made her 19th start of the season and improved to 8-9.
"I think we had a lack of confidence these last couple weekends so I think a win like this definitely gets everyone's minds right heading into this weekend against Troy," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "Callie did a good job. She was aggressive, she hit her spots and it's huge when a pitcher can give you goose eggs on the scoreboard."
Nina Villanueva went 4-4 with a home run in the sixth, a triple and two singles. The junior finished with two runs and an RBI.
The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Jolene Schaefer was hit with the bases loaded to score Britnea Barilli.
UT Arlington's bats came alive in the fifth inning, scoring six runs as the lineup batted around. Two runs scored on bases-loaded walks. Shelbi Sikes had a sacrifice fly to right field and freshman Kacey Everett hit her second home run of the season to extend UTA's lead 7-0.
Sophomore Lauren Ramsey singled in her first at bat of the season.
The Mavericks return to Allan Saxe Field this weekend to host Sun Belt Conference foe. The three-game series begins with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. and concludes and a single game Sunday at 12 p.m.
