Mavs Notch 4-1 Non-Conference Win over New Mexico State
April 12, 2010
Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington Mavericks extended their win streak to four games earlier this afternoon when they handed Western Athletic Conference opponent-New Mexico State a 4-1 loss at Allan Saxe Field.
The non-conference win improved the Mavs to 23-17 overall while the Aggies dropped to 19-19 on the season.
Still felling the momentum from their three shutout wins over Stephen F. Austin last weekend, UTA immediately got on board in the first frame scoring a pair of runs on three hits. Rebecca Collom extended her hit streak to six games after leading off with a double to the right center gap. Senior Heather Fortenberry drove in Collom with a single up the middle and Teri Lyles made it 2-0 following a single down the left field line.
The same results came in the next inning for the Mavericks, as they stacked on two more runs on one hit and one error. Fortenberry once again was clutch, connecting on a single through the right side which scored Courtney Zink. Zink reached on an error by the first basemen earlier in the inning. Samantha Chumchal delivered the Mavs fourth run of the game following a deep sacrifice fly ball to center field, which scored a tagged up Collom at third base.
The Aggies did manage to squeeze in a run in the third on one hit but Hulme was solid the rest of the way. The senior hurler threw her 14th complete game of the season, allowing only one run (earned) on five hits while fanning four.
Fortenberry led the Mavs offense recording her sixth multi-hit game of the season, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI. It was the fourth time this season that the senior outfielder recorded a multi-RBI game.
Collom, Lyles and Kelsey Kaiser also recorded hits against the Aggies.
UT Arlington will have a few days to rest before they return to conference play this weekend in Huntsville, Texas. The Mavs face Sam Houston State in a three game series beginning with a double-header Saturday, Apr. 17 at 1 and 3 p.m.
