CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - UT Arlington's eight-game winning streak ended Sunday with a 5-3 setback at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the finale of a three-game Southland Conference softball series.

The Mavericks (20-17, 14-10 SLC) struck first with a solo homer in the first inning by freshman Rebecca Collom, but the Islanders (17-25, 7-14) responded with four runs -- three of them unearned -- in their half of the inning to help head coach Jake Schumann earn his 200th career victory.

UTA, which won the first two games of the series at Chapman Field on Saturday, suffered its first loss since March 29.

Collom's homer was her ninth of the season, tying her with senior Amanda Swofford for the team lead. Swofford was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Sophomore Cara Hulme (11-5) allowed two earned runs and just four hits in six innings. She struck out two and walked two.

The Mavericks had eight hits off Margo Hurdt (5-5), but Collom's homer to center field was their only earned run of the afternoon.

The Islanders scored all four of their first-inning runs with two outs. After an RBI single by Kim Connelly and an error by UTA third baseman Whitney Simpson that allowed Stephanie Estrada to score, Lauren Peters delivered a two-run double to center field.

The Mavericks sliced the deficit to 4-3 in the fifth inning. Junior Christina Allen walked and senior Katie Jones reached on an error. Both came home on Swofford's first triple of the season.

A&M-Corpus Christi got some insurance in the sixth with an RBI single by Peters, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

UTA returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at Tulsa, starting at 3 p.m.
