SB: Five-Run Third Helps Troy Avoid Sweep

ARLINGTON, Texas -- A five-run third inning lifted Troy to an 8-7 win over UTA softball to keep the Mavericks from the three-game sweep, on Sunday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.

UTA (24-20, 12-8 Sun Belt) and Troy (28-20, 12-10 Sun Belt) played nearly three full games on Sunday, as the opener was postponed in the sixth inning on Friday night and was concluded with an 11th inning walk-off homer from Laura Curry to open the day. UTA then rallied from behind for a 5-2 walk-off grand slam from Brittany Wyllie to clinch the series.

UTA starter Randi Phillips (14-7) worked 2.1 innings, allowing five hits and five runs, walking one. Alyssa Chavez came on in relief of Phillips in the third inning and worked the final 4.2 innings. 

Troy starter Annie Willis (15-6) worked five innings, allowing six hits and three runs before giving way to Kynsley Blasingame who worked the final two frames.

Reagan Wright led the offensive attack for the Mavs, going 2-for-3 with her 10th and 11th homer of the year, a three-run shot in the sixth and a three-run job in the seventh inning. Wright hit three homers in the three games on Sunday. UTA also got three-hit games from Whiney Walton and Aileen Garcia. Wyllie and Bri Burchianti each notching hits. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Trojans opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, loading the bases and scored a run on a hit by pitch. Kylee Hussey then cleared the bases with her sixth homer of the year, a grand slam to give Troy a 5-0 lead.



Erica Davis hit her fourth homer of the year, a two-run shot, to stretch the Trojans lead to 7-0 in the top of the fifth inning.

Wright's 10th homer of the year came as a sixth-inning, three-run homer to cut the Troy lead to 7-3.

A two-out wild pitch allowed the eighth run of the game to score for the Trojans in the seventh.

Walton cut the lead to 8-4 with a two-out RBI double into the gap in the seventh inning. UTA then saw Wright crank her 11th homer of the year over the leftfield fence, a three-run shot that cut the lead to 8-7.
