ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington captured the season series against Abilene Christian with Wednesday night's 5-1 victory over the Wildcats at Allan Saxe Field.
The Mavericks improved to 20-26 overall and 2-1 against ACU this season. UTA also beat the Wildcats (18-25) earlier this month in Abilene and lost to ACU in Lubbock back in March.
UT Arlington starter Callie Collins (12-10) limited the Wildcats to five hits and nearly recorded her second complete-game shutout of the season. She escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth to keep the scoreless outing intact, but ACU scored in the seventh.
"Callie struggled a little bit today, but the makings of a good pitcher are being able to struggle and still finding a way to win," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "She did a really great job of that today."
"Our girls came out with good focus and good energy," Fox said. "They really made a statement in that first inning. Those runs early in the game were able to sustain us all the way through."
The Mavericks return to Sun Belt Conference action Saturday with a doubleheader against Louisiana with first pitch set for 1 p.m. at Allan Saxe Field. The three-game series ends Sunday with another 1 p.m. start.
