ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas-San Antonio's bats were too much for the Lady Mavericks as the Roadrunners pounded out 14 hits in defeating host Texas-Arlington 10-1 Sunday afternoon in Southland Conference softball action.
The loss drops the Lady Mavericks to 17-24 overall and 13-13 in league play while UTSA improves to 37-16 and 18-5.
Jessica Rogers doubled with two out in the opening frame to get things started for the Roadrunners. Aimee Murray followed with a run-producing single and Jennifer Davis doubled to give UTSA an early 2-0 advantage.
UTSA went back to work in the third as Rogers worked a lead off walk and scored on back-to-back singles by Murray and Davis. Jessica Els plated two runs with a single to right field and Amanda Horton followed with a RBI single of her own to chase UTA starter Jill Garro from the game. Liz Fuentes entered in relief, hitting a batter and walking one to load the bases for the 'Runners with two out. Fuentes allowed just one run to score on a Mel Torres sacrifice fly as she struck out Jenny Garcia to end the threat.
Davis led off the UTSA fourth with a solo home run over the right field wall, her 12th long ball of the season. Els singled and Horton took a Fuentes pitch deep for her fifth round-tripper of the year to give UTSA a 10-0 advantage.
Garro was tagged with the loss for UTA after allowing seven runs on nine hits. Ursula Mares (18-7) earned the win for the 'Runners after being touched for just three hits and one earned run.
Katie Jones, Clougherty and Petrino each connected for a hit in the contest for the Lady Mavs. Davis and Horton paced UTSA with three hits apiece.
