CONWAY, Ark. - The UT Arlington softball team fell to the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears 2-0 and 5-2 in a Southland Conference doubleheader Tuesday.
In Game 1, UTA pitcher Teri Lyles gave up four hits and walked one batter in six innings, which resulted in two runs for the Sugar Bears (35-18, 11-7 SLC).
Stephanie Gonzalez and Courtney Zink were the only two Mavericks to make contact at the plate as the team completed the game with just two hits. Kelsey Kaiser picked up a walk and UTA finished with 11 strikeouts.
The Mavericks (13-23, 3-11) found some luck from the plate in Game 2, but still fell short to Central Arkansas’s 10 hits for five runs. UTA picked up eight hits in the second game with freshman Hillary Steed going 2-for-4 with one run and Lyles went 2-for-3 with one run.
"We concentrated on taking a more aggressive approach at the plate," UT Arlington interim coach Angela Perry said of Game 2. "We let the balls be balls, and attacked the strikes."
Callie Collins fell to 6-12 after giving up five runs, which included one walk and just two strikeouts.
The Mavericks head back to Allan Saxe Field as they take on the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Friday and Saturday, with a doubleheader Sunday against Nicholls State.
