SAM HOUSTON STATE DROPS LADY MAVS 4-1 IN SLC TOURNEY

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Sam Houston State's Aydrien Guajardo held the Texas-Arlington offense to only two hits in seven innings as the Bearkats dropped the Lady Mavs 4-1 in the first round of the Southland Conference tournament Friday afternoon in San Marcos. UTA falls into the loser bracket of the double elimination tourney and will face top seeded and regular season champion Texas-San Antonio Saturday at 11 a.m.
Lauren Boone led off the Sam Houston first with a double off the wall in left center and was sacrificed to third before coming home on a single by designate player Shelly Sleep to put the Bearkats in front, 1-0.
SHSU struck again in the second as Elizabeth Magee connected for the 'Kats second double of the day and scored after back-to-back singles from Paige Oberhammer and Lauren Boone.
The 'Kats continued to score, plating two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third frame to take a 4-0 lead.
Autumn Petrino became just the second UTA base runner after reaching first on a fielding error by the 'Kats second baseman to lead off the top of the fifth. Back-to-back ground outs advanced Petrino to third before designated player Courtni Anderson plated the run with the Lady Mavericks first hit of the afternoon.
Texas-Arlington will return to the field Saturday at 11 a.m. facing off with top seeded Texas-San Antonio.
