DENTON, Texas -- UT Arlington fell 8-7 after North Texas hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.
Britnea Barilli reached on an error by the Mean Green first baseman and Kallan Thompson moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt in the first. Nina Villanueva singled to right-center scoring Barilli and putting the Mavs on the board early. Meagan Michele stepped up to the plate and hit her fourth home run of the season as the ball went over the left center wall and the Mavs led 3-0 with one out.
Schaefer doubled after NT's third basemen tipped the ball into foul territory. Lyles was thrown out at first, but not before advancing Schaefer to third. Rachel Forshaw picked up an RBI single as Schaefer crossed the plate to lead North Texas 4-0 at the end of the top of the first.
North Texas scored on a single to left field with two outs for its first run of the game in the bottom of the first. UTA starter Callie Collins picked up her first strikeout of the game leaving two NT runners on.
The Mavericks (22-25, 6-12 WAC) had a quick outing in the second inning going three up, three down. North Texas' Karly Williams started the bottom of the second with a standup double to left field and would score on a throwing error by Michele to cut the Mavs lead to 4-2. Collins would strike out the next batter on three pitches to end the inning.
The Mavericks added two more runs in the fourth to lead 6-2. Rebecca Stokes walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a North Texas error. Villanueva singled to right field later in the inning to bring Barilli home.
The Mean Green climbed within three runs after four complete innings. Lyles relieved Collins in the bottom of the fifth.
Schaefer started the seventh with a standup double down the line in left. Forshaw also doubled scoring Schafer with one out, and the Mavs ended the seventh inning up 7-4.
The Mean Green put two runner on with one out and Jordan Terry singled to load the bases for North Texas with the winning run at the plate. Taylor Schoblocher hit a walk-off grand slam to end the game.
The Mavericks are back in action this weekend as the team travels to San Antonio to take on the UTSA Roadrunners for a three-game series.
