SAN ANTONIO, Texas— UT Arlington defeated UTSA in a come-from-behind 4-1 win at Roadrunner Field Friday night.
The Mavericks (23-25, 7-12 WAC) completed the game with six hits and three RBI, while senior Teri Lyles threw six strikeouts and improved her ERA to 1.60.
Courtney Buchman got things started for UTSA with a single in the bottom of the first. Buchman advanced to third on a Siera Sproul double to left-center with two outs. Meagan Low flied out to Jolene Schaefer at centerfield to end the inning leaving runners in scoring position.
UTA picked up its first hit of the game when Lyles singled over the shortstop’s head to start the third inning, but the Mavs were unable to move Lyles.
In the bottom of the fourth with one out, Jolene Graham homered over the left field wall to give the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.
Kallan Thompson singled to left field in the sixth with two outs and stole second sliding under the tag. Nina Villanueva doubled to right center field to score Thompson and tie the game 1-1. Meagan Michele hit the ball to left field, but Villanueva was called out at home to end inning.
In the bottom of the inning, UTSA loaded the bases with two outs but a pop up ended the threat.
Schaefer picked up a lead-off single through the pitcher's legs in the seventh. Forshaw bunted and reached on a fielder’s choice, while Schaefer reached second on a throwing error. Lyles reached on an error and advanced to second on a throw. Forshaw moved to third and Schaefer scored to give the Mavs their first lead of the game at 2-1. Freshman Rebecca Stokes doubled down the left field like scoring Forshaw and Lyles.
Darian Blake tripled to left center with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but the next batter grounded out to Lyles and UT Arlington picked up the 4-1 victory.
The Mavericks are back at Roadrunner Field Saturday for a doubleheader set to start at 3 p.m.
