ARLINGTON, Texas - Senior Laura Jones tossed her 11th career shutout to help lead the UT Arlington softball team to a 4-0 victory over Central Arkansas to close out the regular season at Allan Saxe Field on Sunday afternoon. With the win the Mavericks clinch the No. 2 seed and first round bye at the Southland Conference Tournament, which begins in San Marcos on Thursday, May 8.

Jones (7-11) clinched the SLC series sweep for the Mavs (27-21, 20-10) without giving up a walk and striking out six, while fanning four. Lyndsey Harris (1-21) took the loss for the Bears (6-43, 4-25) giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

After three and a half scoreless innings, senior Amanda Swofford put the Mavericks first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, she hit a double to the right center field fence and advanced to third on ground out from designated player Heather Fortenberry. An error by Bear's shortstop Janae Owens allowed right fielder Kristin Moore to arrive safely at first and Swofford to cross home for the first run of the game.

UTA pulled away with a trio of runs in the home half of the sixth, including a double from Moore and another UCA error. Center fielder April Clougherty kicked off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on an out for Christina Allen. Swofford drew the walk and Fortenberry reached on the Bear's second error of the game loading the bases with one out. Moore hit a double to right center plating Clougherty and Swofford, but was caught off second from the right fielder. With two outs, freshman Whitney Simpson singled to center field to score Fortenberry from third to give UTA the 4-0 lead.



Jones came in for one last inning of work and shut down the Bears in the top of the seventh with a fly out and a pair of strikeouts for the win.

Sunday marked the final home game for UTA's seniors who were honored before the game - Kristin Moore, Brittany Stevens, Laura Jones, April Clougherty, Katie Jones, Amanda Brown and Amanda Swofford.
