SB: Mavs win series, clinch WAC Tournament spot

SAN ANOTONIO, Texas – The UT Arlington Mavericks clinched a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament after winning their series against the UTSA Roadrunners, 2-1.
UT Arlington will take on the No. 3 seed Louisiana Tech on Wednesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. in Ruston, Louisiana.
“Our backs were against the wall and the girls stepped up and did what it took,” UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said after Saturday's doubleheader. “We got a little help from some other teams in the conference, so we didn’t have to sweep this weekend, but it’s nice to take two out of three and feel like you’re peaking at the right time.”
UT Arlington 6, UTSA 4
Britnea Barilli led the Mavericks with a lead-off walk to start the top of the first and Nina Villanueva also walked with one out. Meagan Michele picked up an infield single to load the bases. Jolene Schaefer reached on a fielder’s choice, while Barilli was called out at the plate. Teri Lyles singled down the left field line scoring two and advancing Schaefer to second.
Collins struck out her first two batters before Siera Sproul reached first on a throwing error. Sproul advanced to second, but was left on as Collins picked up her third strikeout.
Jolene Graham doubled to deep center to start the bottom of the second inning for the Roadrunners. Victoria Birdwell bunted and reached on an error, advancing Graham to third. Samantha Beeson picked up an RBI groundout as UTSA picked up one run before the Mavs retired the side.
Villanueva singled to left field and Michele hit her fifth home run of the season to give UTA the 4-1 lead in the top of the third with no outs. UTSA made a pitching change moving Graham to the circle with Schaefer at the plate. Schaefer walked and another single for Lyles moved Schaefer to second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and another wild pitch would score Schaefer and move Lyles to third. Rebecca Stokes singled up the middle for an RBI with the Mavs leading 6-1.
The Roadrunners put runners on with no outs and one run scored on a sacrifice fly to right field scoring one run in the third inning.
In the bottom of the fifth UTSA put two runners on and with two outs and both runners in scoring position Meagan Low doubled scoring two runs to cut the Mavs lead 6-4. Graham reached on an error moving putting runners on the corners. Jori Fox walked to load the bases for the Roadrunners but UTSA popped out foul to end the inning.
Barilli singled to leftfield and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and Villanueva walked with two outs, but Michele flew out to end the top of the sixth.
Schaefer singled to start the top of the seventh, but was called out on a fielder’s choice as Lyles reached first. Forshaw reached on a fielder’s choice as Lyles was called out at second and Stokes flew out to center field to retire the side.
Courtney Buchman singled to left field and would advance to second on a two-out single from Graham. Birdwell popped out to Forshaw to end the game.
UTSA 4, UT Arlington 2
With two outs Villanueva singled to left field and Michele followed, putting two runners on and they would end the inning stranded.
Darian Blake started thins off for the Roadrunners with an infield single. Low doubled to left center and advanced on the throw home as Blake score to give UTA the 1-0 lead. Graham singled down the left field line scoring Low. Sproul singled as Graham was called out at second.
Vivan Tijerina reached on an infield single to start the bottom of the second and scored on Paige Hamilton's single to lead 3-0. Lyles would take over the circle as UTSA’s top of the lineup took the plate, but couldn’t move another run across the plate.
Villanueva hit a two-out double and Michele hit her second homer of the day as the ball and the right fielder’s glove went over the right center wall to cut the Roadrunners lead to 3-2.
Graham answered back with a home run over the left field wall for her second home run of the weekend to give the Roadrunners the 4-2 lead.
Forshaw picked up a single down the right field line to start the top of the seventh. Stokes popped out to the shortstop and Zink walked with one out. Barilli was called out looking and Thompson grounded out to first base to end the game, as the Mavs split the doubleheader.
