MAVS PULL OFF SEVENTH-INNING HEROICS
May 5, 2006
NATCHITOCHES, La. - Senior outfielder Autumn Petrino ran over McNeese State catcher Jenny Clay at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning as UT Arlington scored twice in the inning to come-from-behind to beat the Cowgirls 2-1 in the opening round of the 2006 BellSouth Southland Conference Postseason Tournament at the Demon Field Friday afternoon.
UTA (30-20) advances to face Texas State (33-20) Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Jenna Fortune led off the seventh inning with a double to left-center field and scored on Petrino's single to right field. After Amanda Swofford grounded out to third base to advanced Petrino to third base, April Clougherty hit a slow roller to third base to set up the dramatic play at the plate.
"We were able to hang around until we got something going offensively," said Head Softball Coach Debbie Nichols-Hedrick. "Jill (Garro) did a good job of hanging in there and giving us a chance at the end."
Garro (17-12) scattered three hits in the complete-game win. She allowed McNeese's only run of the game in the first inning when Jana Jones doubled to left-center field to score Christina Allen who led off the game with a walk.
Garro dodged trouble in the fourth inning as McNeese State loaded the bases with one out but Garro got shortstop Kristi Hanan to line out to first baseman Dee Jay Nelson and struck out third baseman Callie Shiro to end the threat.
NOTES: The win snaps a four-game losing streak in SLC Tournament play for the Mavericks. The win was the third seventh-inning comeback for UTA this season. UTA improved to 4-0 in the season against McNeese State. MSU pitcher Jessica Denham lost her fourth straight decision to UTA.
