UTA COMEBACK NOT ENOUGH IN 8-3 LOSS TO BEARKATS

HAMMOND, La. - Five first inning runs for Sam Houston State spelled doom for Texas-Arlington as the Lady Mavericks couldn't mount a large enough comeback in the 8-3 loss to the Bearkats in the opening round of the 2005 Southland Conference Tournament here Friday.
The `Kats plated five runs on five hits in the opening frame off UTA starter Jill Garro. A two-RBI single by A.J. McAvoy and a Kara Reeves three-run home run plated the runs for SHSU.
UTA rallied in the fourth, loading the bases with no outs. April Clougherty drew a lead off walk and Katie Jones singled to right. Down in the count 0-2, Dee Jay Nelson fought off six pitches before earning a walk to load the bases. After an Autumn Petrino fielder's choice, Jenna Fortune connected for a two-RBI single to center field. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, Amanda Swofford walked to load the bags with two out. SHSU starter Melissa Collins worked her way out of the jam, striking out Lacey Leadbetter.
A Lindsey single in the fourth plated Lauren Boone who walked earlier for the `Kats sixth run.
The Lady Mavericks loaded the bases again in the fifth after back-to-back singles from Clougherty and Jones alongside a Nelson walk. SLC pitcher and freshman of the year Shalayne Blythe entered in relief and enticed two ground outs to escape the Lady Mavs threat.
Lindsey put the stamp on the `Kats ticket to advance with a two-out, two-run home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the sixth.
UTA managed to push a run across in the top of the seventh as Autumn Petrino singled to left to plate Clougherty who walked earlier.
Garro (12-14) was tagged with the loss after lasting just one inning and allowing five runs on five hits and a walk. Nicki Wilson tossed five innings of relief, allowing just three runs on eight hits.
Fortune and Jones paced the Lady Mavs offense with two hits apiece.
Collins earned the win for the `Kats after allowing just two runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of work. In a relief effort, Blythe tossed 3.0 hitless innings allowing just three baserunners on two walks and a fielder's choice.
The Lady Mavs will face McNeese State in the elimination game at 6:30 p.m.
