HAMMOND, La. - Five first inning runs for Sam Houston State spelled doom for Texas-Arlington as the Lady Mavericks couldn't mount a large enough comeback in the 8-3 loss to the Bearkats in the opening round of the 2005 Southland Conference Tournament here Friday.

The `Kats plated five runs on five hits in the opening frame off UTA starter Jill Garro. A two-RBI single by A.J. McAvoy and a Kara Reeves three-run home run plated the runs for SHSU.

Down in the count 0-2, Dee Jay Nelson fought off six pitches before earning a walk to load the bases. After an Autumn Petrino fielder's choice, Jenna Fortune connected for a two-RBI single to center field. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, Amanda Swofford walked to load the bags with two out. SHSU starter Melissa Collins worked her way out of the jam, striking out Lacey Leadbetter.

A Lindsey single in the fourth plated Lauren Boone who walked earlier for the `Kats sixth run.

The Lady Mavericks loaded the bases again in the fifth after back-to-back singles from Clougherty and Jones alongside a Nelson walk. SLC pitcher and freshman of the year Shalayne Blythe entered in relief and enticed two ground outs to escape the Lady Mavs threat.
