Lafayette, Louisiana – UT Arlington softball's bats came alive as the Mavericks defeated Texas State 5-1 in the Sun Belt Conference Championship Wednesday afternoon at Lamson Park.
Senior Callie Collins improved to 13-14 after striking out three Bobcat batters. Junior Nina Villanueva led the team with three hits and one run.
"We came out agressive and we stuck to our game plan," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. " I thought Callie did a great job and we were ablt to put runs on the board to help her out."
Texas State got on the board early with a sacrifice fly to center field to lead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
Freshman Kacey Everett doubled down the left-field line to score Jasmine Tanksley from first base in the second inning.
In the fifth inning Nina Villanueva tripled to right field to score Shelbi Sikes. Texas State replaced starting pitcher Ashley Wright with Rayn House. Sophomore Jolene Schaefer also tripled to right field as Villanueva scored for a 3-1 lead.
UTA continued to make a push as Britnea Barilli doubled to score Tanksley in the top of the sixth inning. Villanueva picked up her third hit of the game to score Barilli to make it a 5-1 ball game.
The Mavericks take on No. 4 seed WKU at 5:30 p.m. in another must-win game in hopes to advance to double elimination.
