LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – UT Arlington softball ended its 2014 season with a 6-1 loss to WKU in the second round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship Wednesday night at Lamson Park. The Mavericks wrapped up the season with a 21-33 overall record.
Senior Callie Collins played her final game in a Maverick uniform Wednesday night as she threw 226 pitches throughout two games in 13 innings. The Mavericks beat Texas State 5-1 earlier in the day.
"I think Callie did a really good job again of giving us a chance to win. You could definitely see her senior maturity out there," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "We made a couple mental mistakes early and that's what speed from another team does. They put some pressure on us and we didn't handle it well and I think that has a little to do with our youth. I was happy that we came here and fought and they competed until the very end."
Britnea Barilli scored on a throwing error in the top of the first inning to give the Mavericks an early 1-0 lead. WKU started their half of the inning swinging, as the Lady Toppers scored three runs off four hits to take the lead.
The Lady Toppers scored one run in the second inning on a throwing error to extend their lead to 4-1. After two scoreless innings, WKU scored two runs on three hits in the fifth inning.
The Mavericks are 2-3 in conference postseason play under Fox. UTA is losing only one senior (Collins) to graduation going into its second season in the Sun Belt in 2015.
