The 2011 Southland Conference softball regular-season title came down to the final game of the series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Sunday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field. Despite a strong effort by the Mavericks they came up short, falling 2-0 on their home field.
The setback dropped the Mavericks to 33-23 overall and 20-10 in Southland action.
Sophomore Teri Lyles took the loss in the circle, falling to 14-13 on the year. Lyles allowed two runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work. Callie Collins finished the game, pitching 4.2 innings, surrendering zero runs on one hit while striking out four.
After securing a pair of wins against the Islanders on Saturday, UT Arlington was unable to carry the same momentum into the final game. The Mavericks struggled offensively, only connecting on one hit in the game. Junior Erica LeFlore accounted for the Mavs lone hit, going 1-for-3. LeFlore finished the series batting .500, going 4-for-8 with a home run, double and drove in four RBI.
With two innings complete and scoreless, UTA moved to the top of the third and quickly found themselves down 2-0 after a fielding miscue. TAMU-CC's Cassie Redman opened the inning by laying down a bunt to third base but UTA's third baseman Taylor Zink rushed her throw and missed her target at first. Redman advanced to second on the error. Sandy Schumann moved Redman to third on a sacrifice bunt and a Lauren Sanders RBI-single through the right side plated Redman.
The inning continued as Caley Jeter loaded the bases after she connected on an infield hit. With the bases loaded, UTA's defense was drawn in for the out at home but Brittany Tucker hit a blooper over second baseman Courtney Zink's head for an RBI-single, making it 2-0.
Immediately following the second run, head Coach Debbie Hedrick called for a pitching change and Collins came in to pitch. The true freshman was able to get the final two outs to end the inning without any runs scoring.
The Mavericks had several opportunities to score runs but just couldn't come up with that clutch hit. UTA left four runners on base.
Senior Rebecca Collom surpassed UTA's single-season base-on-balls record in her second at bat. Collom started the day tied at 41 with former teammate Cara Hulme but a pair of walks put her at 43 for the season and 100 for her career.
Prior to the start of the game, seniors Collom and Jordan Barry were honored in Senior Day for their hard work and dedication to the UTA softball program.
UTA heads into the SLC Tournament on May 12-14 as the No. 2 seed and will face the winner of No. 3 Texas State and No. 6 Northwestern State on Thursday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. in Huntsville, Texas.
